KYC verification: what it is, why you're asked for it and how to pass it first time
What KYC is, why every dollar account requires it, and how to complete it in minutes. Including the five mistakes that block the most accounts and how to avoid them.
What KYC means and why it is mandatory
KYC stands for Know Your Customer. It is the set of checks a financial institution runs to confirm you are who you claim to be before letting you move money.
This is not a commercial decision made by each app. It comes from anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing regulation, and it applies to banks, exchanges, payment processors and digital asset platforms alike. When an app asks for your ID, it is meeting the same requirement a bank would apply if you walked into a branch.
Which is why the opposite pitch deserves suspicion: if a service offers to move money for you with no verification at all, either it is operating outside the regulatory perimeter or the money does not travel as far as it promises.
At D-ONE CASH the check is run by Persona, a specialist provider, through Bridge's infrastructure. Neither your ID nor your selfie ends up circulating through our own systems.
What you need before you start
Have these three things ready and the process will not stall halfway:
- A valid government-issued ID: national ID card, passport or driver's licence. Valid is the operative word.
- A phone or computer with a camera, because you will be asked for a selfie.
- Your home address and date of birth.
One practical tip that saves retries: do it in natural light, without flash, resting the document on a matte surface. Glare on plastic is the single most common reason a document that looks perfectly legible to a human gets rejected by the system.
Step by step
- Sign in to the app. If your account is unverified you will see the "Verify your identity" screen.
- Tap "Verify identity now": Persona's secure flow opens.
- Fill in your details, upload your document and take the selfie. You are returned to the app afterwards.
- Accept the Terms of Service. This step is separate from identity and equally mandatory.
- The screen unlocks by itself as soon as verification is approved, usually within minutes.
The five mistakes that block the most accounts
These are the real cases that reach our support team most often. None is serious, but each costs days if you do not know where to look.
1. You finished the identity check and the account is still locked. Nine times out of ten, step 4 is missing: accepting the Terms of Service. Personal verification has two halves and the second one is constantly forgotten. If it is pending you will see an "Accept terms of service" button on the verification screen; the link also arrives in your welcome email.
2. You verified the company and the wallet still asks for your identity. These are two independent checks: KYB unlocks the business panel and personal KYC unlocks your individual wallet. Completing one does not complete the other.
3. It says "waiting for beneficial owners" and you already verified yourself. A beneficial owner's verification is part of the company process and is distinct from your personal KYC. Every declared owner — including you, if you marked yourself as one — has to open the Persona email they received and complete that link. Check the spam folder too.
4. You reopened the form and it asks for everything again. That is expected behaviour: the business form is single-session and does not save progress. Gather every document and complete it in one sitting. If what is missing is beneficial owners, do not resubmit the form — their verification travels by email.
5. Everything is complete and it still says "under review". Once the data and the owners are in, a final compliance review remains, normally under one business day. It requires nothing from you. If more than two business days pass, get in touch.
KYC and KYB: the difference that confuses everyone
| KYC | KYB | |
|---|---|---|
| Verifies | You as an individual | Your company |
| Unlocks | Your personal wallet | The business panel |
| You provide | ID + selfie | Incorporation, ownership, activity, UBOs and source of funds |
| Takes | Minutes | Depends on the beneficial owners |
The usual confusion comes from assuming one replaces the other. It does not: if you own a company and want to use both sides, you need to complete both.
Another common trip-up: if signing in tells you your email "belongs to a company", you are using the KYB email. Your session is personal — sign in with your usual address and reach the business panel from there.
What happens to your data
Your document and selfie are processed by Persona as a specialist verification provider, within Bridge's infrastructure. D-ONE CASH receives the verification outcome and the data needed to operate your account, not a file containing your ID sitting on our servers.
The specifics of what is stored, for how long and under which legal basis are in the privacy policy. If you want the step-by-step with screenshots, including the business side, see the full verification guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does KYC verification take?
Usually minutes. The app screen unlocks on its own once approved. For companies (KYB) the timeline depends on every beneficial owner completing their part; the final compliance review normally takes under one business day.
Can I open a dollar account without KYC?
No — and be wary of anyone offering it. Any platform genuinely moving money is required to verify its users' identity under anti-money-laundering rules.
I verified my identity but my account is still locked. What is missing?
Most likely accepting the Terms of Service: it is a separate step from identity verification. Open the app and look for the "Accept terms of service" button on the verification screen.
Does verifying my company also unlock my personal account?
No. KYB unlocks the business panel and personal KYC unlocks your individual wallet. They are independent processes and both must be completed.
Which documents work for KYC?
Any valid government-issued identity document: national ID card, passport or driver's licence. You will also need a camera for the selfie and your home address.
Why was my document photo rejected?
Glare is the usual culprit. Retake it in natural light, without flash, with the document on a matte surface and all four corners inside the frame.
